Oma....

A couple of weeks ago I was REALLY having a craving for a particular meal that Oma cooks. It is by far my most favorite meal she cooks (and others in the family share this thought with me lol). What is it you are probably wondering? Ok, how about country fried steak, gravy, mashed potatoes, cole slaw and homemade biscuits. My mouth is watering and it's only 9a.m.
I should probably give some background info here. When the boys(as I have always affectionately called them) and I were growing up, mom would bring us to "town" most every Saturday to spend the day with Oma and Opa. What an incredible blessing that was. It allowed us to grow up and develope a wonderful relationship with our grandparents, a relationship that most people aren't fortunate enough to have. Because of these visits I have so many memories that are dear to my heart. Some (many)of these memories of course involve food. :) Oma would always cook lunch for us. This was back when you didn't eat out every chance you got. It wasn't until many years later she told me that the cole slaw I loved was actually Opa's recipe. I have mastered the steak, gravy and mashed potatoes but she could never tell me how to fix the cole slaw because she didn't measure the ingredients.
So I sent Oma a text and asked when could get together for dinner. I would help her cook and hopefully this time I could watch and see what goes into making the slaw and how much is needed. Well, last Friday was the night. I watched her make the slaw, memorized the ingredients and tried my hand at it this week. Imagine my delight when it tasted about as good as hers. :) Although TJ doesn't care for slaw, Sarah Austin and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And I can tell you it will be made many more times for dinner at my house. And every time I will think of my Oma and Opa and how very blessed I was to know them.
